The Role – Head of External Communications
As Head of External Communications, you will:

  • Lead The Guardian’s press office team, delivering proactive and reactive communications.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, media stakeholders, analysts, and influencers.
  • Draft and oversee impactful press releases, speeches, social media, and multimedia content.
  • Shape and protect the Guardian’s editorial and commercial reputation across global platforms.
  • Monitor media coverage, deliver data-led insights, and create strategic action plans.
  • Innovate in digital PR, social media storytelling, and countering misinformation online.
  • Represent the Guardian at industry events and contribute to reputation-building initiatives.

About You
We are looking for a talented communicator with:

  • Senior-level experience in external communications, PR, or media relations.
  • A proven track record in crisis communications and reputation management.
  • Strong writing skills across digital, print, and multimedia platforms.
  • Experience leading press strategies for high-profile organisations.
  • Knowledge of UK media and a passion for journalism and news.
  • Confidence in building relationships with global stakeholders.
