Financial Controller

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Financial Controller to lead financial governance, compliance and operational excellence across the organisation.
This is a strategic leadership role within a mission-driven charity focused on improving child health worldwide. Reporting to the Associate Director of Finance, you will play a critical part in safeguarding financial integrity, driving accurate reporting, and supporting long-term sustainability.
You will manage a team of six and oversee statutory reporting, payroll, financial controls, treasury, audit and systems optimisation. This position is ideal for a qualified and experienced accountant who thrives in a collaborative, purpose-led environment.
Key Responsibilities of Financial Controller
- Lead accurate and efficient month-end and year-end close, including group consolidation and statutory accounts
- Ensure full compliance with tax, audit, charity accounting and SORP regulations for financial controller.
- Act as primary contact for internal and external auditors
- Oversee payroll, cash flow, accounts payable/receivable, and treasury operations
- Enhance financial systems, internal controls and reporting processes
- Coach and develop a high-performing finance team
- Partner with senior leaders to provide financial analysis and strategic insight
- Support budgeting, forecasting and key funding or transformation projects
Required Skills & Experience
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with a finance/accounting degree
- 5–7+ years’ experience in financial leadership, preferably in the nonprofit, healthcare or public sector
- Proven experience managing audits and producing consolidated statutory accounts
- Strong analytical mindset and meticulous attention to detail
- Expert Excel user with strong knowledge of financial systems
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and develop a finance team
