About the Role
Smart Energy GB is at a pivotal moment in delivering smart meters to every home and small business in Great Britain. We are seeking a Non-Executive Director to join our Board, representing the interests of energy consumers—particularly domestic users and microbusinesses.
The Board plays a critical role in setting strategic direction, monitoring performance, and ensuring accountability. As a Non-Executive Director, you will provide independent oversight and support the organisation’s mission to promote smart meter adoption and enable consumers to manage energy use more effectively, including those in vulnerable circumstances.
Key Responsibilities
Attend and contribute to six Board meetings annually, plus the AGM and ad hoc engagements (approx. 1 day/month).
- Review Board papers in advance and actively participate in discussions and decision-making.
- Support the development and monitoring of the company’s business plan, budget, and performance targets.
- Ensure the organisation operates within legal, financial, and governance frameworks, including risk management and audit processes.
- Act as an ambassador for Smart Energy GB, explaining and supporting Board decisions to stakeholders.
- Serve on sub-committees (e.g. Audit & Risk, Remuneration) as required.
- Provide occasional strategic advice to the executive team between meetings.
If appointed to the Audit and Risk Committee, you will:
- Attend ~4 meetings per year
- Review committee papers and contribute to governance oversight
What We’re Looking For
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Strong understanding of smart meters and their benefits for consumers
- Knowledge of Smart Energy GB’s role within the national rollout programme
- Ability to provide strategic insight and challenge constructively at Board level
Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Marketing and communications
- Behavioural change and public engagement
- Working with vulnerable communities
- Energy sector or smart metering (domestic/non-domestic)
- Financial literacy, including budget scrutiny and value-for-money evaluation
- Commitment to good governance and board-level responsibilities
- Ability to champion the interests of energy consumers
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- A clear commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in public services
