About the Institute of Osteopathy
The Institute of Osteopathy (iO) is the professional body for UK-regulated osteopaths, representing around 75% of the profession. Our mission is to unite, promote, and advance the osteopathic profession to improve public health and wellbeing. We work to increase recognition and collaboration between osteopaths and other healthcare professionals and stakeholders.

Governance and strategic oversight are delivered by the Council and its subcommittees, including the Audit and Risk Committee and Remuneration Committee. These bodies play a vital role in ensuring strong governance, transparency, and effective delivery of our goals.

About the Role
We are seeking a new Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee to lead and strengthen our oversight of risk management, internal controls, and financial governance. This includes responsibilities across the iO and the Osteopathic Foundation—our charitable arm.

You will also sit on the Remuneration Committee, which meets as required to review executive compensation and advise on pay frameworks.

This is a unique opportunity to influence the financial integrity and strategic risk posture of an organisation committed to promoting health and professional excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert leadership and assurance over the iO’s financial reporting, audit processes, and risk management systems.
  • Ensure internal controls are robust and subject to appropriate scrutiny, including external and commissioned internal audits.
  • Oversee the work of the Audit and Risk Committee, ensuring alignment with iO’s strategy and values.
  • Contribute to the work of the Remuneration Committee, advising on executive pay and performance frameworks.
  • Collaborate with the Council, CEO, and executive team to support policy development and strategic delivery.
  • Represent the iO positively with external stakeholders, championing good governance and transparency.

Essential Criteria

  • CCAB-qualified accountant (or equivalent), with senior-level Audit and Risk Committee experience.
  • Strong understanding of financial governance, risk management, and internal control frameworks.
  • Experience with organisational compliance, corporate governance, and financial oversight in complex environments.
  • Proven ability to make sound, evidence-based decisions and offer constructive challenge.
  • Effective communicator with high levels of integrity, discretion, and personal probity.
  • Commitment to upholding diversity, equity, and inclusion values.

Working Arrangements

  • Meetings are typically held virtually (via video or phone), with occasional in-person commitments (e.g. Council observation, Board lunches).
  • Travel within the UK may be required on occasion.
